Abstract

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a disease that affects the respiratory system and influences the adaptation of the fetus to extrauterine life, making it more vulnerable. With these bases, a descriptive cross-sectional retrospective study was initiated in a group of patients who entered the NICU of the Guasmo Sur General Hospital in August 2023, in which a total of 10 newborns with difficulties of pulmonary origin were registered, the predominant sex was male, the type of delivery was elective cesarean section and premature births, in addition to taking into account the history of the mothers who were predominantly diagnosed with premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) followed by mothers with toxic habits, after analyzing the data, it is concluded that the risk factor that contributes to the highest morbidity rate is Premature rupture of the membranes (PROM). Obtaining the conclusion that full-term newborns born by scheduled cesarean section present a higher risk than those born by normal delivery, for these cases it is essential to standardize nursing actions on the care applied to newborns with RDS.
