Abstract

The contemporary university has a fundamental role in the preparation of new professionals from a perspective that corresponds to the new demands that the knowledge requires, in order to reach higher levels of performance. It means the insufficiently updated state in which some of these institutions of the third world are located, with regard to the structural-functional aspects and ways of thinking about themselves, in particular the Latin American and Caribbean ones, however a brief overview is made of what cuban universities have achieved in some of these aspects.
Particularities are proposed that these institutions must attend to update, as well as to obtain a professional formation that positively influences the necessary transformations in what refers to the change of mentality and the achievement of educational excellence, to reach a prosperous and sustainable society.

    Graduada de Doctor en Pedagogía en la Universidad de la Habana, Cuba;  de Doctor en Ciencias Psicológicas en la Universidad Alexander Hertzen,   Leningrado, Unión Soviética y  Doctorado en Ciencias en la Universidad de Holguín, Cuba. Profesora Consultante del Departamento de  Pedagogía Psicología y Profesora de Mérito de la Universidad de Oriente. Actividad investigativa y aportes: Concepciones teóricas y metodologías sobre  habilidades y  competencias pedagógicas  profesionales,  sobre aprendizaje, excelencia y creatividad educativa. Enfoque totalizador y transdisciplinar de la actividad pedagógica profesional.
